"I was born two months to early. It could have gone real bad. I'm working on a song called "Incubator". I always come too early".
And yes, he was growing up in a musical family. His mother was a piano teacher and his father was playing in the rock (!) group “November”. Julians first musical influences were Elvis, Abba and The Beatles. “They’re still on my top 10 list.”
At the age of six he started playing the guitar and he wrote his first song “Grabbarna på stan”. “I changed to the bass when i heard the bassline of Duran Durans “New Religion”. Then I knew I wanted to form a band.” Many bandnames, band members and 200 songs later he had a band called “PICNIC”. “We used to rehearse 5 times a week. I was a virgin til quite late.” In the 90’s they were in london looking for a record contract, (like a-ha had done), they were going through europe by train with their guitars, playing at clubs and in the streets. “We had a great time. Trying all the things you havn’t done before and some things you shouldn’t try.” In Japan they took part of the “Teen Idol Festivals” performing for more than 60.000 screaming girls. “Sony in japan wanted to do some records with us. They wanted us to sing som japanesee. We told them that we were not interested, I think we went to Sydney for some club gigs instead.” One funny thing, that most people don’t know much about, is that Julian put together the child choir for “Heal the world” when Michael Jackson played in Stockholm. “I could have all the pepsi in the world. I prefer coca-cola.”. Julians 80’s influenced pop had a hard time during the late 90’s. “I love the 60’s. I hate the 70’s. I love the 80’s. I hate the 90’s and yes I love the new decade.” Between the years 1998-2008 Julian was a member of the Swedish electropop group “BOBBY”. The band had 2 top 20 hits with “She’s History” (2005) and “Losing Control” (2003). It was their debut album “Romantic & Bleeding” and the following tour who made the biggest impression.
Their videos was shown everywhere and they took part in many TV shows. Julian was also the bassplayer in the band KAMERA, 1998-2001. In the summer of 2004 Julian formed a new band, THE PAPER FACES. They had a radio hit with “Disco Boy” and they performed at some of the biggest festivals in Sweden: Arvika, Siesta and Hultsfred. The EP “Breakin’ Up”
was released in 2006 with a live performance on MTV. A small tour of Europe followed and in England they played live at BBC. (Another funny thing most people don’t know much about, is that Julian was playing the bass, on tour with Swedish Grammis Award winning band, song of the year, Raymond & Maria, in the fall of 2004.)
In 2007 Julian was a member of the trendsetting Swedish band “LUSTANS LAKEJER”. They took part in that years Swedish song contest with the song “Allt vi en gång trodde på” and the following tour. The last Bobby album “Thursday in this universe” was released in 2008. The single"Autumn never leaves” was on the radio and on hit collections. It was in 2004, after the first Bobby album and tour, Julian started writing songs for a soloalbum. “Mainly, in Bobby, I was writing the melodiies and Torben the lyrics. I had some ideas for some lyrics and I wanted to collaborate with other singers and musicians, just for fun”. Then through the years Julian recorded demos with a little help from his friends. “I wanted to focus on a real and true synth pop record, in these days they call it electropop i think”. Julians favorite bands when he was a teenanger (besides duran duran and a-ha) was depeche mode, pet shop boys and kraftwerk. “I think Bobby were more into pop and with the paper faces we played some new wave kind of pop/rock. I love playing the bass.” He hooked up with producer Carl Hammar and they started putting the album together in the fall of 2008. “Well it took some time but whatever...”
Now with his first soloalbum, Julian really could live out his synth pop dreams.
There are many guest performances on the album such as Christer Lundberg (Universal Poplab), Sophie Rimheden, Toril Lindqvist (Alice In Videoland), Space Age Baby Jane amongst others. The first single from the album “Love can turn us blind” ft. Kitty (P3, Tracks, ZTV) was released in June and the album is set for a release in November.
